Previous reports have suggested that the New York Knicks will be quite busy in the offseason as they look to add some star power to their squad for the coming campaign. As it turns out, however, the Knicks could also be looking to stand pat this summer with the intention of landing a huge star via free agency come 2022.

According to Knicks insider Ian Begley of SNY, it's very much possible that New York opts to keep a considerable amount of their cap space available in the offseason with their sights set on what is expected to be a star-studded 2022 free agency class (h/t Joseph Zucker of Bleacher Report):

“As recently as last month, a source said the Knicks have talked internally about the possibility of holding enough cap space this summer for 2022 and keeping enough money around to be able to go after a max player in that 2022 class, which should include Zach LaVine and Bradley Beal.”

Zach LaVine of the Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards All-Star shooting guard Bradley Beal are two of the names expected to headline the '22 free agency class. It's very much possible that the Knicks aren't too confident with their chances of landing a superstar this summer, which has prompted them to wait another year before they make their move.

The good news for the Knicks here is that they have a very young core. Julius Randle is just 26, while RJ Barrett, Mitchell Robinson, Immanuel Quickley, and Obi Toppin are all under 23. The sense of urgency to compete for a title is not as compelling when compared to other teams, which should allow them to take their time in terms of making what could be a franchise-defining move.
