Following All-Star forward LeBron James' decision to ink a four-year, $153 million deal to join the Los Angeles Lakers via free agency, the team made a few more additions to the roster that included veteran center JaVale McGee on a one-year deal.

It is a unique move for McGee that goes further than him joining another NBA team as his mother, Pamela McGee, had played for the Los Angeles Sparks during her WNBA career. On top of that, McGee has the opportunity to play with James to help bring the Lakers back to relevancy back in the league.

“Playing in L.A. means so much to me, just because my mother played for USC and also the L.A. Sparks. That’s kind of crazy that I’ll play for the Lakers and she played for the Sparks, and we’re already the first son and mother to play in the NBA and WNBA…..LeBron is a great player, a great leader. We definitely all just need to come together and make it happen. Make this the most exciting city in the world.”

This is a special opportunity for McGee to become a part of a potentially unique situation to play in the city where his mother both played at USC and played professionally while possibly compete for an NBA title. Although he's coming off two seasons with the Golden State Warriors where he won a pair of NBA titles, this is another chance for him to play alongside James for the first time in his career.

Through his first 15 years in the league, James has proven to be one of the greatest players to play the game. What has been most remarkable is that he has yet to show any regression in his game as he has put together yet another MVP-worthy campaign.

Beyond that, he has a chance to bring back a high level of excitement and buzz to the franchise that has been lacking for quite some time.
