LeBron James and Anthony Davis have established a close bond since teaming up with the Los Angeles Lakers (via Klutch Sports) and winning an NBA championship in their first season together.

Perhaps that’s why James was caught off guard by a revelation about a role Davis will be playing on the day of the NFL title game (the “Super Bowl,” I believe they call it).

Following the Lakers’ surprisingly stressful double-overtime victory over the shorthanded Detroit Pistons at Staples Center on Saturday, James and Davis conducted their postgame Zoom session with reporters together, leading to a jovial back-and-forth between the two superstars regarding their Sunday plans.

“I plan on getting up early, get some treatment, then go back to sleep,” LeBron James said when asked if his recovery schedule the day after playing 46 minutes would cut into his Super Bowl Sunday routine.

James also divulged his family’s tradition of ranking the commercials.

“I’m locked in on the game and the commercials. Gotta be locked in on commercials … I don’t wanna miss none. As a family, we always rank like top-five best Super Bowl commercials, so I’m looking forward to that.”

Apropos of that revelation, ESPN’s Rachel Nichols mentioned that Davis would be starring in a commercial during Super Bowl LV, causing James to shoot a surprised look toward his close buddy.

“Why am I just hearing about this?” the offended King asked.

“It’s a surprise … thanks for ruining it, Rachel,” Anthony Davis cracked, good-naturedly.

Jokes aside, AD said his inclusion in a Super Bowl ad genuinely means a lot to him.

“It’s something that’s super cool to me, being a huge football fan. Like Bron said, you always watch the commercials … That’s one of the reasons why you watch the Super Bowl. For me to be a part of that legacy … it was great to me. I’m not sure how the world’s gonna take it yet. … I’m excited to be a part of that.”

Davis didn’t reveal when the ad would be or who it would be for. Davis’ known endorsements include Nike, Red Bull, Foot Locker, and Saks, if you want to make a prediction and add a prop bet into your pool.

“If you got a commercial on Super Bowl Sunday, you're doing something right,” James said. Funnily enough, James recalled filming an ad for The Big Game in the past, but couldn't remember what it was (a true GOAT metric).

“I know how much those commercials cost. … I remember the budget,” he recalled. He noted how the cost for ads being dependent on when it comes during the game, and “if you get a '30' compared to a '60' or a '90'” (seconds).

“I think I’m a 15,” Davis joked, self-deprecatingly.

In case LeBron James needs a refresher, his Super Bowl ad was … last year. And, no wonder James' memory was fogged by the finances, considering his 2020 ad for GMC’s Electric Hummer ran for two minutes.

Unfortunately for Davis, his beloved Green Bay Packers fell to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Championship Game, so his ad may be the highlight of his viewing experience.

When it comes to the actual football game, James was once again diplomatic about his prediction.

“I just want to see a great game,” he said, echoing his postgame sentiments from Thursday. James said he has friends on both teams, including Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski and Travis Kelce. (James is a Dallas Cowboys and Cleveland Browns fan.)

In addition to being the only Lakers All-Star to partake in a Super Bowl ad this Sunday, Davis will be the only one to have no dietary restrictions, according to a jealous James. However, the burgeoning tequila/mezcal mogul and oenophile will be tapping into his favorite liquids, at least.

“I can speak for me and I can speak for if I was 27 like him. No, I can’t eat fun food like I’d like to … probably baked wings. It’s not gonna be how I wish it was when I was 27 like AD … I can’t do it at 36. I will have a hell of a time. There will be plenty of Lobos and wine passed around in my house … I just want to see a great game.”

On Saturday night, James made sure to break open the vino after closing out the Pistons with two step-back dagger triples in the final minute of the second overtime. As he walked back to huddle, James signaled that he was ready to call it a night.

“I was just ready to go. I’m 36 years old,” James admitted. “My heart is not sustainable for two overtimes … I was just ready to go home. … I got a bottle of wine that’s ready to be opened, and I delayed it for two overtimes.”

LeBron James dropped 33 points and 11 assists in the 135-129 win, while Davis added 30 points of his own. In the spirit of the weekend, James showed off his quarterbacking skills during the third quarter, hitting tight end Talen Horton-Tucker on a wheel route for a touchdown.

The Lakers (18-6) will largely take the day off on Sunday — the team’s first break since returning from a seven-game road trip. L.A. will face the Oklahoma City Thunder at home on Monday.

Kickoff for the Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and Buccaneers is at 6:30 p.m. ET at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. Enjoy the festivities, folks, and wager carefully.
