Whenever LeBron James makes a decision, most of the time, it’s newsworthy. So when the four-time NBA Most Valuable Player decided to take his talents to Hollywood and open the next chapter of his basketball career with the Los Angeles Lakers over the summer, the news sent shockwaves across the sport.

The Lakers were among the favorites to land the services of the three-time NBA champion, but even with the massive expectation that he’s going to Los Angeles, people were still left in a state of disbelief when Klutch Sports, James’ representative, announced to the world that he’s signing with the Purple and Gold. And on Monday, during the NBA’s media day, James finally spoke about his decision to join the Lakers in front of reporters.

“My decision was based solely only on my family and the Lakers. I’m a basketball player. I play ball. That’s what I do. That’s what I live by. When I do it at the level I do, everything else will take care of itself. As far as my business, those things have been taking care of themselves way before I even came out here to be part of the Lakers franchise.”

While James is still the league’s best player – if not, definitely among those in the top percentile – he’s already on the wrong side of 30, about to turn 34 in December. His career decisions of late are more attuned to what’s best for his family and his future and Los Angeles is a city conducive for his endeavors outside of basketball.

That being said, James made it a point to underline the fact that his move to LA was a basketball decision more than anything else.
