Despite finally hanging up his laces after 21 years in the NBA, Dirk Nowitzki is still expected to stay connected with the organization in some capacity in the very near future. This is, at least, according to Mavs Rookie of the Year front-runner Luka Doncic, who believes that Dallas will be offering the German some type of job sooner rather than later:

Mark Cuban has hinted at something like this, but while this scenario definitely sounds like a sure thing somewhere down the line, we're thinking that Dirk will opt to enjoy his retirement for at least a year or so before he gets back to work. He did leave it all on the court throughout his tenure in the league, so we definitely won't take it against him if he decides to take a year or two off to spend time with his family.

Then again, given his work ethic and competitive spirit, it would not be surprising to see Nowitzki back with the Mavs organization in the immediate future. Maybe he's the type of guy who will easily get bored with retirement and decide to get back on the saddle right away.

What we know right now, though, is that Nowitzki intends to stay in the U.S. and is currently not considering going back to his native Germany. His whole life is now here, so at this point, it makes sense for him to apply as a U.S. citizen, as he has recently stated.

As for Doncic, however, the torch has symbolically passed down to him, as he is the man who is now expected to lead the Mavs to the heights once reached by the legendary Dirk Nowitzki.
