The New York Mets made a huge splash on Friday as they locked up the best outfielder on the market in Starling Marte, who signed a four-year, $78 million deal. They addressed one of several needs this offseason and added some much-needed versatility to their offense who immensely struggled to produce in 2021.

After agreeing to terms, Marte spoke on the opportunity to play for the Mets and sounds extremely excited to get to work. Via Hector Gomez:

“The Mets have it all. It will be a great opportunity to play with them. They are in position to compete right now on a World Series.”

Despite an awful season, the Mets do have the talent to make a run at the Fall Classic and Marte knows it. Their rotation was depleted because of injuries to Jacob deGrom, Carlos Carrasco, and Noah Syndergaard, who now left for the LA Angels.

Offensively, it was simply just a down year, but the pieces are there with the likes of Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor, and hopefully others such as Michael Conforto and Javier Baez, who the Mets will be looking to retain this winter. Marte's ability to hit for power, average, and steal bases will undoubtedly prove to be valuable for New York. The Mets also added Eduardo Escobar and Mark Canha on Friday, two versatile players who possess offensive upside.

The sky is the limit in 2022, but this team must bring in one or two arms as well. Kevin Gausman is one of their main targets, while Jon Gray is on the Mets' radar as well.

Fans should be ecstatic to know that Marte has such big aspirations for this franchise right from day one.
