The San Diego Padres take on the Philadelphia Phillies. Check out our MLB odds series for our Padres Phillies prediction and pick.

Mike Clevinger gets the start for the Padres. The Phillies have not announced a starting pitcher.

Mike Clevinger has made two appearances this season, and they were very similar to each other. Twice, Clevinger pitched into the fifth inning but did not complete the inning. Twice, he gave up three runs. He has pitched a total of nine innings and given up six runs. Will he break from this pattern or affirm it? That's a question to ask when considering a Padres Phillies pick based on the given Padres Phillies odds.

The Phillies are in an uncertain spot in their rotation after a four-game series in Los Angeles over the weekend against the Dodgers. Manager Joe Girardi wanted to be sure to match his best starters against the Dodgers, and his team won three of the four games, coming within one strike of a very rare four-game road sweep in Dodger Stadium. The Phillies might pursue a bullpen game in this contest on Tuesday. That can't b a particularly comforting prospect for a team which has had substantial bullpen problems in recent years, and which struggled to protect leads against the Dodgers in L.A. Tread carefully when making a Padres Phillies pick in this contest.

Why The Padres Could Cover the Spread

The Padres are a good baseball team. They are winning games without Fernando Tatis, who is injured and unavailable. Manny Machado and his supporting cast have held the fort in Tatis's absence, showing that the potential for this group is considerable. One key in the Padres' rise this year is manager Bob Melvin. The veteran skipper has a steady hand and knows how to manage a clubhouse. One didn't get the sense that was always (or even usually) true last year under Jayce Tingler. The Padres bounce back from bad losses. They win tough, close games in the later innings, as they showed over the past weekend against the defending World Series champion Atlanta Braves. This is a resilient group with the right mindset.

The other main reason to pick the Padres is that the Phillies might go with a bullpen game. The words “Phillies” and “bullpen” being used in the same sentence will make Philadelphians angry, scared, or both.

Why The Phillies Could Cover the Spread

After winning three of four against the Dodgers in Los Angeles, the Phillies have to be full of confidence as they come home. Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, Rhys Hoskins, Jean Segura, Nick Castellanos — they're all hitting the baseball hard, and the Phils are showing how lethal their offense can be. They scored eight or more runs in three straight games against the Dodgers. They roughed up Walker Buehler and Julio Urias on back-to-back days. In a season defined by the dead baseball and a downturn in the overall number of home runs in MLB, the Phillies are cracking jacks left and right. They are mashing the ball.

Given that Mike Clevinger has not attained top form this season, it's reasonable to think the Phils can slam him for several runs.

Final Padres-Phillies Prediction & Pick

These are two very talented teams. Picking a winner seems tricky. Picking a high-scoring game, given the pitching matchup, seems less tricky. If you think both teams will score at least five runs, take the over with confidence.

Final Padres-Phillies Prediction & Pick: over 8.5
