People around the world mourned the death of Kobe Bryant back in January, and they mourned because Bryant was more than just a basketball player.

Bryant would come to be eulogized as a fierce advocate for women and women's sports. He was also lauded as a tremendous father, or a “Girl Dad” as ESPN's Elle Duncan once stated.

Kobe Bryant's death hit that much harder because his daughter, Gianna, and seven others were in the helicopter when it crashed outside Calabasas on that fateful January day.

Images of Bryant and Gianna were shared across all forms of social media, with some Instagram accounts even dedicating artwork to the father-daughter duo.

On this Father's Day, ESPN posted a tribute to honor Bryant and Gianna, featuring other athletes who are also “Girl Dads.”

Kobe was one of the fiercest competitors on the hardwood, and will go into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame next year as one of the greatest players in the history of the NBA.

But fatherhood and post-retirement life are every bit as enduring in terms of Bryant's legacy.

The “Black Mamba” was far more than just a hooper. He was, truly, a “Girl Dad.”
