Jamie Newman was hoping to boost his profile after transferring from Wake Forest to Georgia, but he is prioritizing personal health.

Newman announced Wednesday afternoon he was opting out of the season, and plans to begin preparations to enter the 2021 NFL Draft next April.

Newman is just the latest collegiate star to skip out on the 2020 season, joining LSU wideout Ja'Marr Chase and Michigan cornerback Ambry Thomas.

The graduate transfer has been ranked the No. 6 quarterback in the upcoming draft, according to ESPN NFL Draft expert Todd McShay, who projects Newman will go somewhere in the third round.

Newman possesses tremendous size at 6'4ā€³ and 230 pounds, and he used his size to make plays outside the pocket. Newman rushed for 574 yards and six touchdowns last season, also throwing for 2,868 yards and 26 touchdowns.

It was expected Newman would be the Bulldogs' starting quarterback, though the role could very well fall to another transfer in JT Daniels. The former USC man missed all but one game in 2019 due to a knee injury, and now finds himself the top candidate to replace longtime Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm.

There are still a lot of unknowns when it comes to the state of college football in 2020.

The SEC, Big 12 and ACC are among the major conferences planning to play after the Pac-12 and Big Ten postponed the season until the spring.

However, the Big Ten might be drawing up plans to play this fall, though one conference official said there was ā€œstill a lot of work to do.ā€

All the uncertainty is surely impacting decisions of guys like Newman about whether they choose to play and attempt to increase their stock or merely pursue individual workouts and ensure personal health.
