Despite the expectation that he'd make his debut at some point in the playoffs, the Nets were eliminated from the postseason before Ben Simmons made an appearance for the team. Simmons was nursing a bad back which prevented him from taking the court with his Nets teammates as they were swept in the first round by the Boston Celtics. Now looking ahead to the 2022-23 season, Nick Friedell revealed that Simmons is set to undergo surgery on his back this week on Thursday.

Simmons will undergo a microdisectomy procedure on his back that is expected to alleviate the pain he's experienced which is being caused by a herniated disc in his back. The recovery time is expected to be between 3-4 months, according to ESPN's NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski.

That timetable would have Simmons return well ahead of training camp, meaning he should be good to go for the start of the 2022-23 season, barring any setbacks. The surgery comes as somewhat of a surprise. While it's been known that Simmons has been dealing with back issues, it wasn't apparent that surgery would be required.

The Nets released an official statement regarding Simmons' injury, which reads:

After consultation with multiple back specialists, it has been determined that the best course of action for Ben's long-term health is for him to undergo surgery. The microdiscectomy procedure, scheduled for Thursday, is designed to alleviate pain caused by the herniated disc in Ben's back. Further updates will be provided following the procedure.”

Hopefully Simmons doesn't face any setbacks from the procedure and is able to get back in time for the onset of the 2022-23 season, at which point Nets fans will hope he can be the player they've been envisioning since the blockbuster James Harden trade.
