The Brooklyn Nets are in trouble. On June 29th, star point guard Kyrie Irving must come to a decision on his plus-$36 Million player option. If he declines and chooses to depart from the Nets, which has been rumored to be a real possibility, the front office could lose control of a roster they sacrificed nearly a decade of draft picks to bring together. So, how does the Nets' number one option, Kevin Durant feel about the situation? Seemingly, he feels nothing at all.

After weeks of rumors surrounding Irving and the Nets, Durant finally broke his silence on his podcast, “The ETCs.”

“I can't be involved…” Durant said. “Being a free agent is one of the most important times of your career. That can't be swayed by anyone else.”

Durant made it fairly clear that he won't even be considering the issue until Irving's departure becomes a reality. KD's contract expires in 2026, when he will be 38 years old. It's uncertain if Durant will force a trade out of Brooklyn if his running mate opts out in five days.

The Nets put a lot of assets into building their super team. Years of draft picks and considerable cap room was burned to bring in the original core of KD, Irving and James Harden. After two seasons with the star-studded cast, Harden is gone. The other two could be next, and could be gone as early as this offseason. The Nets have not made it past the Eastern Conference Finals in their current iteration.

Brooklyn is in full damage control mode. Time will tell how much the front office can salvage from a troubling situation.
