The Kyrie Irving “impasse” is in full effect between the mercurial point guard and the Brooklyn Nets about what their plans are for his future.

Irving is seeking a massive contract extension given that the point guard has one year left on his deal, a player option. But the reports indicate that the Nets are hesitant to make such a lengthy commitment to someone who has proven to be so enigmatic off the court in the past:

With the spotlight once again shining on Kyrie Irving, rumors have been trickling out about some of his more eyebrow-raising moves with the Nets last season. ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith revealed from a source that Irving would supposedly hold and spearhead a separate practice immediately after the ones held by Steve Nash.

Via First Take:

“You know what I found out? Do you know what I've been told? Did you know that this brother Kyrie Irving last season would conduct his own practices?” Smith said of the Nets guard. “So when Steve Nash had the team on the floor, and they practiced, they would finish and he'd go and get five guys and conduct his own practice. … Do you have any idea how disrespectful that is to Steve Nash?”

While players having initiative to improve as a unit is usually a good thing, conducting your own practices beyond the visibility of the coaching staff isn't exactly the manner in which you'd hope to see it manifest. Depending on the nature of those practices, you could have a disconnect in terms of direction on the court — something that the head coach is supposed to be in charge of.
