With the Brooklyn Nets season well underway, the team is looking to keep the focus on the action on the court. However, the Kyrie Irving drama centered around his reluctance to take the Covid-19 vaccine continues to divert attention away from the basketball being played.

The mercurial All-Star received support prior to the Nets' home opener against the Charlotte Hornets. Fans showed up in droves outside Barclays Center holding signs and demanding that Kyrie Irving be allowed to play.

“Barclays Center briefly closed its doors today in order to clear protestors from the main doors on the plaza and ensure guests could safely enter the arena,” per team spokesperson. (via ABC News)

The game proceeded as scheduled without any major hiccups, but you wouldn't be able to say the same with the Nets' on-court play. Brooklyn got trounced by a spirited Hornets side that's raced to a 3-0 record early in the new season.

Kevin Durant's 38 points for the Nets were not enough as he got minimal support from the rest of the lineup. James Harden was limited to just 15 points on 6-for-16 shooting, with nobody else breaching the double-digit scoring mark.

Charlotte, meanwhile, got a dominant game from Miles Bridges, who posted 32 points and nine rebounds. LaMelo Ball flanked him with 18 points, five rebounds, and five assists.

The Nets can try to erase this loss from their memory as they take on the Washington Wizards on Monday night.
