The viewing figures are in for the 2020 NFL Draft and the numbers are enormous. In a letter sent out by the NFL Communications department, the league discussed its record-breaking figures.

“The unique presentation of the 2020 NFL Draft established new all-time highs for media consumption in every category,” said the release. “With over 600 camera feeds from homes across the United States, all telecasts of the 2020 NFL Draft reached more than 55 million total viewers across Nielsen-measured channels over the three-day event, up +16% vs. 2019.”

The league undoubtedly benefited from a viewership standpoint due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which kept most Americans home throughout the weekend. With stay-at-home orders in place, fans were likely clamoring for live sports entertainment of any kind.

The NFL has moved forward with its insistence of opening the 2020 regular season on time with no restrictions, a point that was furthered by the decision to air arguably the most unique Draft in the league's history. Rather than having first-round picks shake Commissioner Roger Goodell's hand on stage, many settled for virtual high-fives and hugs.

While there were myriad logistical concerns on both the side of ESPN and the league's 30 franchises, it appears that most of the technical barriers were cast aside.

Whether the league chooses to adopt a similar format going forward remains to be seen. With plans for the 2021 NFL Draft to be held in Cleveland, the league is likely to adapt to what helped make the 2020 installment so popular, which included a behind-the-scenes looking at many coaching staffs and front offices in their respective homes.
