Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that after taking a year off from coaching, Jim Caldwell, the former Detroit Lions head coach is planning to return to football and will be considered by some teams looking for a new coach.

Before coaching the Lions for four years, Caldwell coached the Indianapolis Colts from 2009-2011. In Detroit, Caldwell compiled a 36-28 record, and his career coaching record is 64-54.

In Caldwell's first season with the Lions, they posted an 11–5 record and made the playoffs as a wild card, but were defeated in the first round by the Dallas Cowboys. Halfway through the 2015 season, the Lions had struggled to a 1–7 record,  but Detroit won 6 of their final eight games to finish the season with a 7–9 record, and Caldwell retained his job.

In 2016, Caldwell's third season in Detroit, the Lions improved to a 9–7 record and lost to the Packers in a Week 17 game that determined the winner of NFC North. The Lions clinched another wild-card berth but lost in the first round to the Seattle Seahawks. The Lions went 9–7 again in 2017 after the Lions missed the playoffs, subsequently, Caldwell was let go by Detroit the day after the season ended.

Detroit hired New England Patriot's defensive coordinator Matt Patricia in the offseason, Lions sit at 5-9 and face off with their division foes the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers in the last two games of the season.

Since being let go by Detroit, Caldwell was hired by the second iteration of the XFL as a consultant.
