The Dallas Stars face off in today's matinee against their divisional rival, the Colorado Avalanche. This could be an exciting game to watch. It’s time to continue our NHL odds series with an Avalanche-Stars prediction and pick.

The Stars are slowly but surely making a push for that all-mighty playoff spot with just 52 points, 5th in the Central Division. The Avalanche are sitting at first place in the league, not just the division, with 70 total points. They look to increase their league-leading points with another win tonight on the road.

Why The Avalanche Can Cover The Spread/Win

It's no secret that the Colorado Avalanche are on fire right now. They're ranked number one in the NHL power rankings and have been riddled with injuries all year long. Speaking of which, superstar Nathan MacKinnon will make his return back to the lineup today after being held out of the All-Star break with a concussion. Without him in these past four games, the Avs have still picked up the slack and have gone 4-0-1.

Now that he's returned, look for them to keep the scoring alive with stars in Cale Makar, Mikko Rantanen, Gabriel Landeskog, Nazem Kadri, just to name a few. Starting in net for the Avs is most likely going to be star goaltender, Darcy Kuemper. He's 22-5-2 in his 32 starts, thanks to the outstanding offensive performance that the Avs provide in front of him. Kuemper is averaging 2.54 goals against with a .916 save percentage. Look for the Avs to keep rolling here, as they have been all year.

Why The Stars Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Dallas Stars have been really pushing for that last playoff position, just three points behind the Anaheim Ducks. A huge 4-3 win on Friday against the Winnipeg Jets in overtime puts the Stars on a two-game winning streak as they wrap up their six-game homestand against the Avalanche tonight. Having played three times this year already, the Stars are on top of the matchup so far posting a 2-1 record against the division rival so far.

They look to improve on that record again tonight before having another crack at it on Tuesday in Denver. Patroling the home crease for the Stars should be Jake Oettinger again tonight. He's Dallas's best option by far, as he has picked up 13 wins in the 18 games that he's started. He averages 2.58 goals against and has a .910 save percentage. The Stars need to stay on top of their offensive game if they have any chance of hanging in there with the Colorado Avalanche.

Final Avalanche-Stars Prediction & Pick

Both teams are very talented on both sides of the rink, but the offense is most likely going to get the spotlight today. Hungry for points, I think both teams will net at least three goals by the middle of the third period. The win could go either way, it just depends on how well each goaltender can stand on their head. Give me the over on this game. It's a little higher than I'd like it to be, but I don't think it'll be an issue for these two teams.

Final Avalanche-Stars Prediction & Pick: Over 6.5 (-110)
