Why The Oilers Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Edmonton Oilers fell out of a wild-card playoff spot after a 5-2 loss to Montreal at home on Saturday. Their roster depth is truly being tested as injuries have become a major issue. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jesse Puljujarvi remain out, along with Tyson Barrie and Kris Russell on the back end. Then there are the goaltending issues as starting netminder Mike Smith has lost his last four starts and claims to be out for tonight's game with stomach flu. This sets up Mikko Kostinen to get another start tonight against the Flames as he's putting up a .904 save percentage and allowing 3.05 goals per game. He'll look to help soften the blow against a very good Flames team tonight.

Why The Flames Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Calgary Flames are absolutely on fire, pun intended. They are 13-1-1 since January 28th and have all but officially secured the number one spot in the Pacific Division. Since their winning streak started back in late January, the Flames are third in goals scored per game (4.20), second in goals against (2.27), sixth in shots (35.0), and fourth in shots allowed (28.6). Defending the home crease tonight will be Jacob Markstrom, as he is leading the league with eight shutouts and posting a .925 save percentage while allowing 2.17 goals against. He'll look to stop Connor McDavid and company tonight in this heated rivalry.

Final Oilers-Flames Prediction & Pick

This game will be the third of four meetings this year between these two teams, and the first one in Calgary. The Oilers won the first two games by tight margins as both games covered the over. The Oilers are desperate for points as they need to stay in the playoff race, but have hit a very tough matchup against their number one rival tonight.

With that said, I think the Flames will come out the gates firing on all cylinders. The main issue for the Oilers is their goaltending, and Calgary will have zero problems exploiting that problem all night. Not only do I think the Flames are going to win, but they're also going to cover the over too. On FanDuel, there's an option to take a winning team in regulation and the over/under as a parlay for some fantastic value. So give me the Calgary Flames and Over 5.5 while it's in plus money at +165.
