With the Green Bay Packers having been sent to an early vacation after not making this season’s playoffs, some of their players have extra time to heal from their injuries. Among those injured Packers on the mend is linebacker Clay Matthews, who underwent a minor knee surgery last week, per Rob Demovsky of ESPN.

A source told ESPN that the Green Bay Packers linebacker underwent a procedure that was described as “a cleanup” last week shortly after the season ended.

Matthews will not take a long time to recover from the procedure, though, as he is expected to be 100 percent healthy once the Packers begin their offseason training.

This is a crucial offseason for Matthews, who has one more season left on his current five-year deal with Green Bay. Set to earn $11.4 million in salary and bonuses 2018, Matthews could sit down with the Packers soon to for a contract restructuring, as noted by Demovsky.

Matthews has spent his entire career so far with the Packers. He was selected by Green Bay 26th overall in the 2009 NFL Draft out of USC. The versatile defensive piece is the Packers’ all-time leader in sacks with 81.0 career quarterback takedowns to go with 328 tackles and 40 passes defended.

Last season, he had 8.5 sacks – his most in a year since 2014. Still, he is an important piece for the Packers’ stop unit that finished the 2017 season 26th in scoring points.

Clay Matthews, who will turn 32 this coming May, missed two Packers games last season, though those absences were due to groin and hamstring injuries.
