The New England Patriots will have some adjustments to make this offseason in anticipation of Julian Edelman’s four-game suspension to begin the 2018 NFL season. Fortunately for the Pats, they have plenty of wide receivers who can vie for the starting spot that’s going to be temporarily left by Edelman.

And Pats head coach Bill Belichick seemed happy of the progress of the team’s other relatively new wide receivers in the likes of veterans Cordarrelle Patterson and Jordan Matthews and rookie wideout Braxton Berrios. All three join a receiving corps that already has Kenny Britt and Phillip Dorsett.

Per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk:

“We’ll see how it goes with Braxton,” Belichick said. “He wasn’t able to do a lot for us during the spring, so this is really our first lengthy exposure to him in our system. So we’ll see how that goes. But Patterson and Matthews and even Britt, who we didn’t get until December, those guys are way ahead of where they were last year, in Britt’s case, or earlier in the spring. And I’d say even the same thing for Phil Dorsett. Even though he was here last year, being able to start at the beginning, he’s had a real good spring, too.”

Patterson was traded to New England by the Oakland Raiders along with a sixth-round pick in this year’s draft for a fifth rounder. That sixth-round pick was used by the Pats to draft Berrios, who recorded 1,175 receiving yards and 14 touchdown catches in four years in Miami Hurricanes uniform. Matthews, meanwhile, was signed by the Pats to a one-year deal back in April.

The Pats need all hands to be on deck to cover for the losses of Brandin Cooks (traded to the Los Angeles Rams) and Danny Amendola (signed with the Miami Dolphins), who were the top two wide receivers for New England a season ago.
