After missing the playoffs, the New Orleans Pelicans are headed to the offseason with one goal in mind: surround young star Zion Williamson with the best talent available.

The Pelicans reportedly want to catch a bigger fish in Kyle Lowry in free agency. But in case they miss out on Lowry, Spencer Dinwiddie is a possible alternative.

Given the understandable pessimism in circulation about the Pelicans’ ability to win the Lowry Sweepstakes in competition with a number of teams closer to true contention, New Orleans has also been increasingly mentioned as a likely suitor for Brooklyn Nets point guard Spencer Dinwiddie when free agency officially starts Aug. 2.

Signing Dinwiddie would be a nice boost for a young Pelicans squad. Before playing just three games and injuring his knee last season, Dinwiddie was on a roll with averages of 20.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 6.8 assists in the 2019-2020 season.

The New York Knicks are also rumored to be interested in signing the former Colorado guard. The Pelicans must act quickly if they intend to sign Dinwiddie, and there's also a big decision to make on Lonzo Ball.

The Pelicans recently traded Eric Bledsoe, Steven Adams, the Nos. 10 and 40 overall picks in the 2021 draft, and a 2022 first-round pick (top-10 protected, via the Los Angeles Lakers) to the Grizzlies for Jonas Valanciunas and the Nos. 17 and 51 overall picks in the 2021 draft. This move eliminates the huge salaries of Bledsoe and Adams and instantly frees up cap space.

New Orleans could potentially get up to $36 million in cap space depending on decisions the front office makes.
