If you're wondering when Rafael Nadal will make his way back to competitive tennis, then here's the answer. According to Liz Clarke of The Washington Post, the Spaniard tennis great is all set to play in his first tournament since the 2021 French Open which would be in the Washington’s Citi Open.

Rafael Nadal, Spain’s 20-time Grand Slam champion whose fighting spirit has won legions of fans, will compete in Washington’s Citi Open for the first time this summer. Tournament officials plan to announce Nadal’s participation Thursday morning.

The 35-year-old King of Clay last saw action in the semifinals at Roland Garros where he lost to Serbian and the current top-ranked player in the world Novak Djokovic to the tune of a 6-3, 3-6, 6-7 (4-7), 2-6 score. That was a bitter loss for Rafael Nadal, considering that he's the winningest player in the history of the French Open with 13 La Coupe des Mousquetaires resting in his trophy case. That's not to mention that losing to Djokovic in that match meant that Nadal lost on an opportunity to break his tie with Roger Federer for the most Grand Slam titles ever (each has 20) while at the same time paving the way for Djokovic to catch up on them.

Djokovic eventually won that tournament to capture his 18th Grand Slam title. He is also favored among the semifinalists in the 2021 Wimbledon men's singles bracket to go all the way.

Rafael Nadal will use the Washington Citi Open as part of his preparation for the 2021 US Open. Nadal has won the US Open four times, the latest being in 2019.
