Oakland Raiders head coach Jon Gruden made a bold proclamation in front of Raiders fans recently when he said he’d find a way to get Khalil Mack back. But as it turns out, Gruden hasn’t even been able to speak with the superstar pass rusher since he took the Raiders job in January.

Per Adam Schefter of ESPN:

Interesting fact of day: Jon Gruden and Oakland DE Khalil Mack have not spoken once since the Raiders hired their new head coach in January. No contact between two men who should be vital this season for the Raiders.

This surprising radio silence isn’t exactly Gruden’s fault, though. As Schefter clarified, the Raiders head coach has reached out to Mack, but he’s been unsuccessful in his efforts to speak to his stud defensive player, who's held out all offseason in search for a new contract.

Obviously, it’s hardly ideal for a new head coach and a team’s star player to have completely no communication heading into the season. But that’s the situation the Raiders currently find themselves in.

That’s why the Raiders striking a deal with Mack as soon as possible. Mack is already planning to hold out during training camp and is unlikely to show up until he has that new contract. Unless the Raiders can get that deal done, they face the very real possibility of Gruden and Mack getting in touch for the very first time in the regular season — that is, if Mack even decides to show up.
