The Los Angeles Rams are coming off their most successful campaign in well over a decade where star running back Todd Gurley was one of the primary factors behind his career-best season.

With the preseason opener on the docket for Thursday night against the Baltimore Ravens, Gurley has expressed he would prefer not to take the field in any of the four games leading up to the regular season, according to Cameron DaSilva of Rams Wire.

“Oh, for me? I definitely wouldn’t want to play in it. But like I said, it is what it is. It’s football – you go out there, you play ball,” Gurley said in his press conference. “I’d probably rather do the preseason honestly because they try to make you do like 12, 100s instead, which is crazy. So, sometimes it’s better to just play in the game, honestly.”

Things will likely play out in a manner that Gurley sees the field sparsely in the preseason given his importance to the team's future as arguably their most important piece to the puzzle offensively. This is even more the case after he agreed to a four-year, $60 million extension last month.

The Rams are hoping to once again to heavily feature Gurley in their offensive game plan next season as he has proven to be one of the best running backs in the league. He is coming off his best season where he earned the NFL Offensive Player of the Year award and was in serious contention to win NFL MVP honors after he led the league with 2,093 scrimmage yards and 19 total touchdowns.

Gurley should be primed for yet another highly productive campaign as the Rams will work to ensure that he remains healthy throughout the rest of training camp and the entire preseason so that he's set to be on the field in Week 1 on the road against the Oakland Raiders.
