Toronto Raptors head coach Nick Nurse has been one of the more successful leaders in the NBA since being hired ahead of the 2018-19 season. Nurse has led the Raptors to two 50-win seasons and an NBA championship and currently has this season's squad in line for an appearance in the play-in tournament despite being without several key players. In an appearance on former NBA player J.J. Redick's podcast, Nurse revealed one of his secrets to coaching. The Raptors head coach revealed why it's important to coach players toward getting paid.

This is interesting stuff from Raptors head coach Nick Nurse. Everyone has heard the common “coach to win the game” philosophy. Not everyone has heard the “coach to get players paid” philosophy. But maybe it should be more common.

The way Nurse sees it, if he focuses on the Raptors players as individuals and does whatever he can to develop them as individual players, it will only serve to help the team.

For example, the way Nurse talks about going from the 13th man to the sixth man can apply to Raptors forward OG Anunoby. Anunoby went from playing just 20 minutes per game in his rookie year to scoring nearly 20 points per game in his fifth season.

Examples like that not only show the kind of coach Nick Nurse is for the Raptors, but also the interesting way that he approaches coaching NBA players.
