It was only a matter of time before Kylian Mbappe's move to Real Madrid became official. Over the weekend, following Madrid's triumph in the UEFA Champions League Final over Borussia Dortmund, 2-0, Mbappe completed his blockbuster move. This epitomized the old adage of the rich getting richer, as the Los Blancos, winners of six of the past 11 CL trophies, have managed to add one of, if not the best attacking forward in football.

As is the case with nearly every bombshell move in sports, there are some who are not big fans. Some fans compared Mbappe's decision to join Real Madrid, the best club in European football this past season, to that of Kevin Durant's choice to spurn the Oklahoma City Thunder in free agency in 2016 to sign with the Golden State Warriors to form a superteam that made them an unbeatable unit, and arguably the best team ever assembled in NBA history.

However, some fans contended that Kylian Mbappe's decision to join Real Madrid doesn't even come close to the impact Durant's choice to join the Warriors had on the sport's competitive picture.

“Not really a comparison, cause in football the best players always go to the best teams,” Reddit user sergechewbacca wrote. Added user Pentinium, “Lol, Mbappe is not even close go kd move.”

One of the main differentiators is that Kevin Durant joined the team that eliminated him from championship contention. Meanwhile, it wasn't as if Kylian Mbappe's Paris Saint-Germain fell to Real Madrid in the Champions League. In fact, it was Madrid's opponent in the Champions League Final, Borussia Dortmund, that knocked off PSG.

“Mbappe's team, PSG, did not lose to Real Madrid this season. Also, he had been in the [discussion] of joining Real Madrid for a couple of years, and the [decision] had been already made before Real Madrid even [reached] the finals. So, KD way worse,” Reddit user bandwagonguy83 explained.

Kevin Durant's Warriors move is way worse than Kylian Mbappe's Real Madrid decision, says fans

Beyond the reasons mentioned above, the nature of football, or soccer, as a sport is that the impact of one player is far less than how much an individual can affect the game of basketball. In basketball, one player can do the heavy lifting by commandeering the majority of possessions. Meanwhile, in football, teams need every player to be a threat on the pitch — a threat to pass, shoot, or make forward runs as well as defend.

In football, a player cannot simply dribble around the opposition. (Unless you're Lionel Messi.) There must be good synergy from all the 11 players on the pitch. Thus, adding Kylian Mbappe, while making Real Madrid an even more dangerous club, doesn't guarantee them the La Liga title or a successful defense of their Champions League trophy.

“There are 11 players on the field in football for a team There are only 5 in basketball. You tell me which sport can an individual be more impactful in,” Reddit user idontknow_whatever wrote.

Moreover, Kylian Mbappe has some experience when it comes to playing in stacked teams. It wasn't as if Paris Saint-Germain were slouches during his time with the club. In fact, at one point, PSG had Lionel Messi and Neymar play alongside Mbappe. Alas, despite dominating Ligue 1, PSG exited the Champions League in the Round of 16 during Messi's stint.

“At one point of time, psg team was Messi, Neymar and mbappe. Won s**t with it,” user likpoper wrote.

Still, it's important to note that Real Madrid will be an even scarier club to face next season. Their front line is as stacked as it can get, with Kylian Mbappe lining up alongside Vinicius Jr. and Rodrygo, with Jude Bellingham just right behind them waiting to make things happen. But this move is not as destructive to the parity of football as Kevin Durant's move to the Warriors was to the NBA.

KD to the Dubs guaranteed championships

It's not like Kevin Durant simply made the decision to join the team that knocked them out of championship contention in 2016. He also joined a Warriors team that won 73 games the season prior, and he replaced Harrison Barnes, the forward who struggled mightily with his shot as the Dubs choked away a 3-1 series lead in the NBA Finals.

Durant is an all-time great shooter in his own right, and adding him alongside Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson made for some ridiculously good but unfair basketball. He elevated an all-time great team and made them an unstoppable force. For two seasons, there was a sense of inevitability that the Warriors will be the team standing tall come season's end, and they might have won three championships in a row had Durant stayed healthy during the 2019 NBA playoffs.
