Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey, who recently agreed to an extension with the franchise, would like to work on a contract extension with head coach Mike D'Antoni this summer.

D'Antoni is under contract with the Rockets through the 2019-20 season.

Morey says he wants D'Antoni to be with the Rockets for as long as he wants to keep coaching in the NBA.

“He's such a critical factor,” Morey said of D'Antoni, via Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle. “Speaking for myself only, I would love for him to be here for as long as he wants to be here. He's so critical to everything we're doing here.

“Hopefully, that's something we can work out at the right time. I think the right thing for everyone is those things are done in the offseason.”

D'Antoni has been with the Rockets since 2016. He has a regular season record of 162-70 and a postseason mark of 17-11.

D'Antoni won Coach of the Year in the 2016-17 season. Houston had the best record in the NBA last season and was one game away from reaching the NBA Finals.

The Rockets are 42-26 this season, which is good for third place in the Western Conference standings. It's been an amazing turnaround in Houston, as the team was in the 14th spot in the West at one point earlier in the season.
