The MLB trade deadline is just weeks away, and as will be the case for multiple other contending teams, the St. Louis Cardinals will look to bolster their rotation.

According to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman, the Cardinals are “seeking one or two starting pitchers.” Heyman brings up Cincinnati Reds hurler Luis Castillo, although he adds that it would be “hard to see” the two-time All-Star get shipped off to a division foe.

The Cardinals have had both Mike Mikolas (2.54 ERA) and Adam Wainwright (3.00 ERA) lead their rotation in the 2022 campaign. They each are the only starters on the roster to have recorded at least 100.0 innings pitched so far this season.

The Cardinals have dealt with multiple injury woes within their starting pitching unit. Nine different players have logged at least three starts for the NL Central powerhouse, as the likes of Dakota Hudson (neck strain) and Jack Flaherty (shoulder strain) have missed time in the campaign due to their respective ailments.

The trade market is not expected to see a shortage of starting pitchers be made available for a move. For one, Heyman did recently note that Los Angeles Angels hurler Noah Syndergaard is suspected by rival executives to be made available, which comes as he is set to become a free agent after this season.

The Cardinals currently sit in second place in the NL Central standings with a 50-44 record. They are in the mix for a wild-card berth in the NL, sitting at a mere one percentage point back of the Philadelphia Phillies for the third spot.
