New Orleans Saints wideout Michael Thomas has been ruled out of action ahead of the Saints Week 5 bout against the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday (via ESPN's Adam Schefter).

Thomas not being available against the Chargers comes as disappointing news for the Saints. The five-year wide receiver was upgraded to questionable to play on Monday before the eventual ruling of him being out.

Thomas has been dealing with an ankle injury since Week 1 that's kept him inactive for the Saints. He saw action briefly this season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a contest in which he caught three of five targeted passes for 17 yards.

The Saints have still been able to produce in the passing game, but his presence would have been great aid against the Chargers. Running back Alvin Kamara has had a sensational season in the downfield so far. He leads the team in receiving yards with 321. He also is leading in rushing with 236 yards.

The Saints will look to go to their usual offensive tactic of Brees dominating behind passes to both Kamara and wideout Emmanuel Sanders. Sanders has been productive for the Saints this season, completing 14-of-22 catches for 182 yards along with two touchdowns through Week 4.

Where the Saints may benefit is in the Chargers defense. The Chargers had their hands full against the Bucs in Week 4, allowing Brady to complete 65.22 percent of his passes for 369 yards and an impressive five touchdowns. To be frank, the Chargers will be in for a long night if they allow that same performance to occur for Brees and company.

As for Thomas, look for him to be available soon in the upcoming weeks.
