The San Antonio Spurs announced Monday that an MRI revealed that point guard Dejounte Murray has a right calf strain, which he apparently suffered during San Antonio's 129-132 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday. Murray will be out indefinitely.

After missing the entire 2018-19 entirely with a torn ACL, Murray has return to average 10.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.1 assists, and 1.7 steals per game, while shooting easily a career-best 37.8% from three. He's still amongst the league's best perimeter defenders.

San Antonio (26-26) isn't completely out of the playoff conversation yet, but were already facing long odds to make the final eight before their point guard went down. They currently sit 12th in the West, four games back of the Memphis Grizzlies (32-32) and looking up at the New Orleans Pelicans (28-36), the Sacramento Kings (28-36), and the Portland Trail Blazers (28-37).

The team is also dealing with ailments to LaMarcus Aldridge (shoulder), Jakob Poeltl (knee), and Marco Belinelli (illness). With Murray looking at missed time, too, the Spurs remarkable streak of 22 consecutive playoff appearances is in even greater jeopardy of coming to an end. The streak is easily the longest of its kind in American major pro sports, and tied for the NBA record.

Derrick White, Patty Mills and Bryn Forbes will hold down the fort at point guard in Murray's absence. The Spurs host the Dallas Mavericks (39-26) on Tuesday, followed by a Friday-Saturday back-to-back at home vs. the Denver Nuggets (42-21) and Minnesota Timberwolves (19-44).
