Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Cameron Heyward recently agreed to a four-year contract includes $65.6 million in new compensation. It is considered to be the biggest total contract given to a defensive player older than the age of 30 in league history. The former Ohio State Buckeye still feels that he can take his game to greater heights in the upcoming seasons.

Heyward also played alongside the defensive end duo of Aaron Smith and Brett Keisel back in the early stages of his career. He implied that he still has ground to cover in honor of his predeccesors.

“Brett always told me, you’re gonna keep getting better, you haven’t hit your prime, and I really took that to heart”, he told reporters. “I felt like there’s another gear for me to hit. I’m entering my 30s, but I was behind those guys for so long, I gotta play catchup. I kind of feel like I’m still in my late 20s”.

Despite playing behind Smith and Keisel back then, it is certain that Heyward was able to pick up invaluable lessons from the two. The veterans were accomplished players who both earned a Pro Bowl appearance and won Super Bowl XL and XLIII in their respective careers.

Heyward will hope to carve his own path in the field and has done well so far as he already notched several milestones along the way. He was already named to two first-team All-Pro selections and snagged three trips to the Pro Bowl through 10 seasons in the league.

Despite having individual accolades, the Pennsylvania native along with the rest of the Steelers will still aim for bigger goals as they set their sights on hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in the upcoming season.
