The 2016 ESPY awards were held at L.A. Live’s Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday afternoon. At it has in past years, the awards show drew the presence of a number of professional athletes. One of those is reigning back-to-back NBA MVP Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors. The 2015 ESPY winner for Best Male Athlete was up for that honor again this year, as well as Best Record-Breaking Performance and Best NBA Player.

As the first award was given for the night, Curry won the award Best Record-Breaking Performance. It was very well deserved as he shattered own record for most made 3-pointers in a season with 402 after no player had ever even reached 300, and as the Warriors went on to win an NBA-record 73 regular-season games.

In a his acceptance speech, he thanked God and admitted that they lost the championship to a great team. He also wanted to make more of something he missed a lot of especially in the finals:

“This is to celebrate just keep shooting threes, hopefully making a couple more when it really matters most.”

As the award ceremony started, Lebron James, Chris PaulDwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony delivered a message of social change. Before Curry ended his own speech, he thanked his fellow NBA superstars and said that sports is their platform to change the world and inspire people.
