In roughly two decades as an NFL coach, Jim Caldwell has gotten two chances to be the head man. If it were up to Phoenix Suns point guard Chris Paul, however, he would be getting a third chance and it would be during this hiring cycle. The NBA All-Star took to Twitter on Friday to voice his support for the former Detroit Lions, Indianapolis Colts, and University of Wake Forest (Paul's alma mater) head coach.

Since entering the NFL in 2000, Caldwell has served as an assistant coach for the Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Baltimore Ravens to go along with the aforementioned head coaching gigs in Detroit and Indianapolis. Caldwell has been out of the league since 2019 but has so far interviewed for the Jacksonville Jaguars head coaching vacancy and is a candidate for a few others.

Paul has apparently seen enough out of Caldwell's stints in Indianapolis and Detroit that he believes in the man…for what it's worth. If the Jaguars do end up considering Caldwell as a finalist for the job, it should have no relation to Paul's advocacy considering he doesn't even play the same sport that he is commenting on.

If the Jaguars, or any team for that matter, want to consider Caldwell, they should do it off of his merits alone. Caldwell reached the Super Bowl as the head coach of the Colts in 2010 only to fall to the New Orleans Saints, making him the second coach that reached a Super Bowl to interview for the Jaguars job after Doug Pederson did so last week.
