Liverpool legend Deitmar Hamann spoke at length about Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara, telling talkSPORT he would be ‘surprised’ if the veteran orchestrator doesn’t move to Anfield this summer.

Thiago Alcantara is fresh off winning the UEFA Champions League final, topping a seven-year run with Bayern Munich since making his move from Spanish powerhouse Barcelona in 2013.

Hamann admits the Spanish midfielder will offer a “different dimension” to manager Jurgen Klopp’s side:

“I never felt he was a defensive midfielder who could play a holding role, but I’ve got to say he was absolutely magnificent [for] Bayern Munich the way he pulled things together,” said Hamann. “He’s a brilliant footballer who I think can give a different dimension to Liverpool’s midfield. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t end up at Liverpool.”

Hamann wondered just how negotiations have gone for Thiago Alcantara, considering Bayern Munich offered him a chance to stay, one he later refused in favor of other options.

“He must have shown an interest in staying otherwise they wouldn’t have offered him a contract,” said Hamann. “But in the last minute he pulled out and said he might want to do something else.

“I’d be very surprised if he turned down a contract from Bayern Munich if he hasn’t got anything else [on the table]. “I’m sure he’s got an offer from Liverpool, it’s probably about the transfer fee now.”

Liverpool is hoping to secure the 29-year-old central midfielder, who is valued at £30 million ($39.2 million). Bayern Munich has a £23 million price tag in mind, and other Premier League clubs like Arsenal have recently entered the race for the two-time Champions League winner.

Thiago Alcantara still has another 12 months in his existing deal with Bayern Munich. If talks stall all summer long, the Spaniard can leave on a free transfer at the end of 2020-21, by which point he will be 30 years old.
