The New York Giants are heading into a very eventful off-season, one that will see them hire a new general manager and a new head coach. They also have a few free agents that they would like to keep around if they can. While the downtrodden franchise might be toiling away as one of the two worst teams of the past half-decade (the New York Jets being the other…go figure) they still had good seasons from guys here and there and a few of them happen to be up for new contracts. So, we sat down and took a look at the Giants' roster before 2022 NFL free agency kicks off in an attempt to pinpoint the three most important impending free agents on the team.

Three “must-sign” Giants free agents

3. Evan Engram

Let's all face it, Engram has been a bust to this point in his NFL career. His best season was his rookie year and he has never shown a huge rapport with quarterback Daniel Jones. But hear us out for a second…what if Jones was the problem? In Engram's two healthiest seasons, he actually produced over 600 yards on 112 targets per year and scored seven touchdowns.

The issue is, only one of those TD's came with Jones as the quarterback. The two just do not have any chemistry on the field and it isn't likely to change. What is likely to change is the Giants' quarterback situation. Whether they are bringing in a brand new rookie to be the starter or they are going with an established veteran, the tight end safety valve is always crucial to a quarterback in his first year in a new system. We say, bring Engram back on a one or two-year deal and see if he can produce another season like his rookie campaign.

2. Billy Price

Price was a first-round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in 2018 before being traded to the Giants before the 2021 season. After a rough start to the year, Price ended up grading as a top-12 center by Pro Football Focus metrics while allowing just two sacks all season. The Bengals might have given up on Price by not exercising his fifth-year option, but he definitely didn't give up on himself and he has set himself up for a nice payday in free agency.

While there is always some risk with a player that didn't fully break out until his contract season, Price's pedigree as a tried-and-true big-ten center from his Ohio State days says that he is due to keep up the stellar play. Price set the Ohio State school record with 55 consecutive starts after taking a redshirt year. Now, with his first entire contract looking like a redshirt, Price is finally stepping into his own as a lineman and it is at the perfect time.

1. Lorenzo Carter

Stop me if you have heard this one before: 2018 draft pick with big-time college bloodlines, has his fifth-year option declined and proceeds to have the best season of his career. We could be talking about Price, or we could be talking about Lorenzo Carter because they had almost the same story–minus the trade of course.

Carter has just 14.5 career sacks, but five of them came in 2021 and it is always hard to find premium pass-rushers. Carter also played decent enough run-defense to warrant a second contract, even if it is just a one or two-year deal like Engram. The last thing the Giants want is for Carter to end up with one of the other teams in the division just as he is coming into his prime.
