The Detroit Tigers faced the New York Yankees at Comerica Park with a chance to witness history. Miguel Cabrera had the chance to become the 33rd player in MLB history, including only the second active player, to register 3,000 hits. Yankees manager Aaron Boone wasn't having it, though.

After doing nothing with his first three at-bats besides registering a walk, Cabrera came to the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning with two outs and runners on second and third and Lucas Luetge on the mound. With a chance to make history on the line, Boone decided to issue an intentional walk to Cabrera.

The Detroit crowd rained boos on Boone for his decision, which has been done one other time since 2020. The crowd feverishly chanted “Yankees suck” as well.

The Yankees received karma right after the cowardly decision. Austin Meadows tacked on two insurance runs to push the Tigers' lead to three. Detroit shut New York out, which has happened to them thrice in this young season. The last time that happened was in 1912, when they went by a different name.

The Yankees lived up to their nickname of the Evil Empire by depriving one of the game's legends of a chance to accomplish something legendary. Although setting up the possibility to get the force out at second base in a close game made sense, baseball fans will not be happy that Boone chose to deprive Cabrera of a shot at making history.

The Tigers will have three home games the next three days coming up against the Colorado Rockies, so Miggy will still get the chance to make history in front of his home crowd. Aaron Boone is already unpopular with the Yankees faithful and the Miguel Cabrera intentional walk won't help matters, even though the legendary hitter was diplomatic when asked about it after the game.
