After sitting out Sunday night's game against the Portland Trail Blazers, Minnesota Timberwolves small forward Jimmy Butler is expected to play Monday evening when the team takes on the Los Angeles Clippers at Staples Center, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.

Butler sat out Sunday due to “precautionary rest.”

Jeff Teague remains out and Derrick Rose is questionable.

Timberwolves head coach and president Tom Thibodeau says the organization wants to be smart with Jimmy Butler, who requested a trade almost seven weeks ago. The four-time All-Star didn’t play at all during the preseason.

In seven games this season, Butler is averaging 22.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.6 assists while shooting 49.1 percent from the field, 36.4 percent from beyond the arc and 82.1 percent from the free-throw line.

The Timberwolves enter Monday with a record of 4-6.

Butler told reporters in Golden State that he’s going to make the call whether he plays in games or not. The 29-year-old says only he knows how his body is feeling. Butler underwent knee surgery last season and an elective hand surgery in July and is apparently still dealing with some soreness.

The Clippers are reportedly one of the teams Jimmy Butler wouldn't mind playing for. The swingman can become an unrestricted free agent during the summer of 2019 if he declines his 2019-20 player option.

Maybe Butler wants to showcase his talent in person to Doc Rivers and the Clippers' brass so that they can get him out of Minnesota.

One thing is certain, though: This saga has dragged on for too long.
