Not long after making their choice to hire Dean Pees as his defensive coordinator, new Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel has also hired the Los Angeles Rams’ Matt LaFleur to be his offensive coordinator.

LaFleur, 38, spent last season as Sean McVay’s offensive coordinator with the Rams. The Titans previously interviewed him for their vacant head coaching job, which ultimately went to Vrabel.

LaFleur did not call plays for Los Angeles last season. However, he was still a significant factor in turning around a Rams offense which went from dead-last in scoring in 2016 to the very top of the league with 29.9 points per game in 2017. Prior to taking the job with the Rams, LaFleur was also the quarterbacks coach for two seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, who were the top scoring offense in the league in 2016.

LaFleur’s main goal in Tennessee will be to make the Titans offense more dynamic, particularly on the passing side. That means making the most out of quarterback Marcus Mariota’s diverse skillset. Mariota took a significant step back in his third year as he threw for just 13 touchdowns. The stagnation of his development was a key factor in the team’s decision to part ways with previous head coach Mike Mularkey.

LaFleur has had a decent track record of helping develop quarterbacks. He mentored Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins in his four-year stint as Washington Redskins quarterbacks coach. He also helped bring out the best in Matt Ryan during his MVP season and contributed to the marked turnaround of Jared Goff during his second season in Los Angeles.
