The Tokyo Olympics were already postponed once last summer. Could it really happen again this July? It certainly looks like a possibility.

The Japanese government has recently extended a state of emergency from May 11th to 31st, per TMZ. Health officials in the country are very worried that a potential fourth wave of COVID-19 could hit them, with the Tokyo Olympics just months away.

IOC president Thomas Bach even canceled a recent trip to Japan due to the surge in cases and it's unknown when he'll be able to return to the country. The virus seems to be affecting a lot of young people as well, which is a massive concern, especially for Olympic athletes.

Japan currently has around 600,000 reported cases and approximately 11,000 deaths. Another glaring issue ahead of the Tokyo Olympics is that just 2% of the Japanese population have actually received their first dose of the vaccine, according to Reuters.

Minister Yoshihide Suga is still hopeful of holding the games after a statement last week, but with things getting worse and worse, it's not a good sign for the Tokyo Olympics.

The country must get on top of its fight against the spread of the virus, even if it means extending the state of emergency well into June. After all, Japan has put a lot of money into hosting these games and it would be an absolute shame to lose them altogether.
