Tennis star Naomi Osaka has always been open about her mental struggles. For all her elite talent, she has admitted several times in the past that her mental health has been her biggest hurdle.

After a much-publicized hiatus, Osaka made her return in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics to compete for her home country Japan. She also served as one of the torchbearers. But as for her performance, she didn't exactly play up to par, bowing out of the third round.

In an emotional Instagram post, the 24-year-old Osaka opened up about her experience in the Summer Games, and she admitted that she should've been more enthusiastic and positive.

“I realized that I had regrets about the whole experience, (not the torch lighting though that was fire literally), there was a deep sense of sadness for not having more fun for the time I was there. Can’t believe I was at the Olympics in Tokyo and I failed to consistently find the immense joy in that.”

The four-time grand slam champion's disposition probably led to her premature exit in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics despite being one of the most heavily favored players. Not to mention, she was playing in her native country. She has now dropped to no. 80 in the world rankings.

But as with many failed experiences, Naomi Osaka, in retrospect, learned significant lessons.

“I think that’s gonna be really important in my life going forward, just enjoying the experiences and making the most out of the time no matter how short or long it is.”

Can't argue with that.
