Andre Iguodala nearly became a member of the Houston Rockets last year only to turn and head back to the Golden State Warriors. That decision paid dividends not only financially but also professionally for the veteran swingman, as he won another NBA title with the team this month when they destroyed the Cleveland Cavaliers in a four-game sweep in the NBA Finals.

Speaking with Zach Lowe on ESPN’s The Lowe Post, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr revealed a hilarious story about how Iguodala broke the news to him and Golden State general manager Bob Myers that he was coming back to the Bay Area (h/t Drew Shiller of NBC Bay Area.)

“Typical Andre — he decided to play a joke on Bob and me. He got us on a conference call, told us he was gonna go to Sacramento.

“We wished him well, and he's like, ‘I got you suckers. I'm coming back' … that's probably the first time it's ever been told. But now that we've won a title and we got it all in our rearview mirror, that story can be told.”

Not that division rivalry matters in the NBA as much as in other pro leagues like the NFL and MLB, but the idea of Iguodala going to the Warriors’ Pacific Division rival Sacramento sounds like something out of the left field.

In the end, though, Iguodala got a three-year contract worth $48 million which won’t expire until 2020.
