Damion Lee of the Golden State Warriors made his NBA debut with the Atlanta Hawks in 2017-18 at age 25. As a member of the Warriors, Lee was frequently asked about his relationship with Stephen Curry, who is his brother-in-law after Lee married Stephen’s sister Sydel in 2018.

While Lee has been a sport about the familial ties, he had some strong words for reporters who were only asking him about Curry – not his own skills or career.

Lee’s forceful and well-phrased response was posted on Twitter by Connor Letourneau of the San Francisco Chronicle. The full quote is transcribed below:

“I play this game; I'm thankful; I'm happy that I'm healthy; I'm blessed; I have an amazing family, whether it's my mom, my aunt or the people that helped raise me and my extended family. But at the end of the day, I need everyone to respect me for me, me as a person and knowing what it’s taken for me, my journey to get here to this point, and I don't ever want that to get blown over or put aside because of some thoughts that you guys may have or other people may have. I just want to dispel all that and end that – right here, right now.”

Lee certainly has a right to squelch any Steph-obsessed remarks, especially considering he will likely play solid minutes for a Warriors team that lacks depth at the wing next season.

While it must be hard being related to a global superstar like Curry, it was good to see Lee stand up for himself and set the narrative on the right path for him going forward.
