The Golden State Warriors have locked up All-Star forward Draymond Green to a four-year, $100 million contract extension. The deal will commence on the 2020-21 season and will go through the 2023-24 campaign.

With this extension, however, Green bypasses the possibility of earning a heftier paycheck – at most $235 million – next summer. Anthony Slater of The Athletic details what Green could have had in store for him had he opted to play through 2019-20 without this extension.

Max, in this instance, is a bit deceiving. Green’s extension, which kicks in after next season, added four years and $99.6 million to his current deal. He could’ve waited and been eligible for a five-year, $201 million max from the Warriors next summer or — gulp — if he won Defensive Player of the Year and stepped into mega max territory: Five years, $235 million.

The former Defensive Player of the Year was up for unrestricted free agency in the summer of 2020. However, Green opted to forego any of the drama and secured his bag just a shade under a year before he hit the market.

This deal works well for both sides. Green, 29, secures his money for the future. He now has $118 million for the next five years, including the $18 million he is scheduled to make this upcoming season. Likewise, the Warriors avoided the possibility of having the aging forward on their books for at least $200 million.

Draymond's extension locks up the Warriors core through at least the next three seasons. Klay Thompson recently signed a five-year max contract with the Dubs, and his deal expires the same summer as Green's. They also have newly-acquired guard D'Angelo Russell under contract until 2023, while Steph Curry's current deal takes him through 2022.
