The Golden State Warriors got some consolation prize in free agency this summer when they found a way to acquire D'Angelo Russell. It remains to be seen how Russell will fit in, and one Warriors assistant coach admitted that chemistry between the newly acquired All-Star and Klay Thompson will be crucial for the team late next season.
Thompson will undergo rehab after undergoing surgery to repair a torn ACL, and is expected to return late in the 2019-20 NBA regular season.
The Golden State assistant coach said that their playoff chances hinge on Thompson's health and rhythm, and how he will fit in with Russell.
“It's about getting Klay back into rhythm and clicking with D'Angelo,” the assistant coach said via Anthony Slater of The Athletic.
Thompson is expected to return in March next year, and it will likely take time for him to adjust to his new teammates. He is tipped to play small forward in a three-guard lineup featuring him, Russell, and Steph Curry late in the regular season.
The Warriors, who were the most dominant team in the league in the past five seasons, will also need to find a regular rotation after losing key players this summer.
Golden State parted ways with Kevin Durant, Andre Iguodala, Shaun Livingston, DeMarcus Cousins, and Quinn Cook this offseason.
