Recently acquired power forward Omari Spellman was introduced to the media for the first time as a member of the Golden State Warriors.

The 6-foot-9 Spellman was selected by the Atlanta Hawks with the last pick in the first round of the 2018 NBA Draft. Spellman won a national title with the Villanova Wildcats in the sole season he played in the NCAA.

Spellman told the media on Tuesday that following his arrival in the Bay Area, Golden State officials told him they wanted to draft him last year.

The Warriors completed a trade for Spellman, sending former draft pick and center Damian Jones and a future second-rounder to the Hawks.

Spellman, 21, added that he's “happy to be here now,” referring to his arrival in Golden State.

The rising sophomore averaged 5.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in 17.5 minutes per game and 46 appearances during his rookie season, shooting 40.2% from the floor, 34.4% from 3-point range, and 71.1% from the free throw line.

Spellman joins former Villanova teammate Eric Paschall with the Warriors. General manager Bob Myers and Golden State drafted the 6-foot-8 forward with the 11th pick in the second round (41st overall) of the 2019 NBA Draft.

Spellman has been criticized for his physique and overweight size, a detriment to his position and stamina on the hardwood. On his weight, Spellman said the following:

“[I'm] very far from where I want to be. It’s gonna be a tough road to redemption, but definitely looking forward to getting on that road with a new organization, new staff.”

He should be a nice addition for the Warriors.
