The ESPYs were in full display on Wednesday night and even in the opening minutes of the sports festivities, it was evident that choosing Peyton Manning to host the event was the absolute right choice to make.

The former All-Pro quarterback took a sly dig at Kevin Durant, getting the entire crowd to laugh and even asked for former teammate Russell Westbrook‘s opinion on his way out of the awkward exchange.

“Our gymnastics team was so dominant that Kevin Durant told me he wants to play for them next year,” said Manning. “And I gotta tell ya, I don't think you'd start for that team, Kevin. — Russell Westbrook, what do you think?”

The awkwardness was real.

Even Durant's mother, Wanda, managed to laugh at Manning's quick wit and enthusiastic delivery, but KD was having none of it — and the whole crowd could see just that as his face was shown in the big screen.

Even a year after it took place, after a championship and a Finals MVP award, the sports family will milk this ongoing joke as long as it can last — especially when it gets this awkward reaction straight out of a Comedy Central roast.

Manning didn't only pour salt on the wound, but spilled acid and flicked a lit cigarette into it, getting the maximum amount of burn a joke like that could get.

Well done, sir.
