There has been some significant progress for the Atlanta Dream in terms of its own players calling for an ownership change following the tumultuous past several months. Sources say that the franchise is now on the verge of being sold, with current co-owner, U.S. Senator Kelly Loeffler, on her way out.

A spokesperson for the WNBA had this to say about the impending sale (h/t  Chris Vivlamore of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution):

“As it relates to the Atlanta Dream, we understand a sale of the franchise is close to being finalized. Once the sale negotiation is concluded, additional information will be provided.”

Loeffler sparked controversy last year when she announced her objection to the Black Lives Movement. Unsurprisingly, this was not received well by the WNBA community, which included the players of the Dream. So much so, that even her own players campaigned against Loeffler in the recently-concluded national elections, showing their full support for her opponent, Democratic candidate Raphael Warnock, who himself emerged as the victor in the Georgia Senate race.

The criticism against Loeffler went far beyond the realm of the WNBA, with big-name sports personalities also throwing shade at the Senator. Even Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James got involved, with the four-time NBA champion even going as far as hinting at a possible ownership coup for the franchise.

With the sale now materializing, it will be interesting to see if LeBron actually put his money where his mouth is. We all know he can afford it, so perhaps “WNBA owner” is a title James will be adding in the near future.
