Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott has announced that wide receiver Zay Jones underwent knee surgery and will miss the rest of the team’s offseason program, per ESPN.

McDermott added that the injury isn’t expected to jeopardize Jones’ season. Although, he did not provide a timetable for Jones’ return.

Jones, 23, was the Bills’ second-round pick in last year’s draft after he had a record-breaking college career where he broke the FBS record for receptions. However, Jones didn’t quite make an immediate impact for the Bills as a rookie. He played in 15 games (10 starts) during his debut season, making just 27 catches on 74 targets with 316 yards and two touchdowns.

The Bills likely didn’t appreciate that fact that Jones got into some off the field trouble this offseason. He was arrested for vandalism, although the charges against him were eventually dropped.

But despite that incident, the Bills are likely expecting big things from their second-round pick in his sophomore season. He will probably start opposite Kelvin Benjamin since there are few other reliable receivers behind those two in Buffalo. Jeremy Kerley and Andre Holmes are the two most established options in what is quite a young Bills receiving corps.

Whoever starts at quarterback for the Bills — whether it’s AJ McCarron or rookie Josh Allen — will need as many dependable receivers as possible, and Jones must be one of them. Hopefully for the Bills, missing the offseason program doesn’t hinder Jones too much, and he can get back to full speed in time for the start of the season.
