The St. Louis Cardinals narrowly escaped with a 3-2 home victory over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night. The Cardinals led 2-0 for most of the game before surrendering 2 runs in the 8th inning. The 2 runs in the 8th spoiled a spectacular 7 inning performance from Adam Wainwright that saw the veteran strikeout 10 batters. However, Albert Pujols got the job done with a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th.

Adam Wainwright commented on his fellow veteran's clutch moment after the game.

“I think we all wanted to see Albert walk it off there. That’s a fair assessment.”

Albert Pujols discussed his hitting approach with 1-out in the 10th inning and a chance to give the Cardinals a win.

“I take my approach out there and really trust my work and trust what I practice day in and day out,” Pujols said. “Obviously, having [Tommy Edman] on third now, I just want to stay away from the ground-ball double play, which I hold that record. I just got a good pitch to hit and I put it up in the air, and it was deep enough for him to score from third base.”

The Cardinals have already enjoyed a number of special moments this season. They have three players potentially retiring after the season in Pujols, Wainwright, and Yadier Molina, so this is a team that wants to win in 2022.

Pujols and Wainwright carried the Cardinals to victory on Tuesday over the Padres. St. Louis will look to add another victory to the win column on Wednesday.
