Charles Marc Hervé Perceval LeClerc was born on October 16, 1997, in Monte Carlo, Monaco, to mother Pascale and father Hervé. He has two brothers, Arthur and Lorenzo LeClerc.

He grew up in a racing environment as his grandfather, Charles Manni, was the founder of Mecaplast (now known as Novares Group) which is a French manufacturer of car parts. His godfather is a former F1 driver, the late Jules Bianchi. To top it all off, his father was also a racer as he participated in Formula 3 in the 1980s and 1990s.

LeClerc began his karting career in 2005 when he won the French PACA Championship, he also won the tournament in 2006 and 2008. He then became a French Cadet champion in 2009 before being promoted to the KF3 class in 2010 where he won the Junior Monaco Kart Cup.

The following year, he won the CIK-FIA KF3 World Cup, the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy, and the ERDF Junior Kart Masters. In the same year, he joined Nicolas Todt’s All Road Management Company.

In 2012, LeClerc moved up to the KF2 class and he joined the ART Grand Prix team wherein he won the WSK Euro Series title as well as finishing runner-up in the CIK-FIA European KF2 Championship and CIK-FIA Under 18 World Karting Championship.

In 2013, his final year of karting, he won the South Garda Winter Cup. He also finished at 6th position in the CIK-FIA European KZ Championship and settled for second place behind Max Verstappen in the CIK-FIA World KZ Championship.

Charles LeClerc graduated to single-seaters and joined British team Fortec Motorsports where he raced at the Formula Renault 2.0 Alps championship in 2014. He finished at the podium seven times during the season en route to winning the Junior Championship title at the final race of the year in Jerez.

In 2015, he graduated to Formula Three and he joined Dutch team Van Amersfoort Racing to race in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. He captured three wins throughout the year and ended up finishing in second place at the Macau Grand Prix.

He joined Prema Racing for the 2017 season as he moved up to Formula 2. He made his debut in Bahrain where he held the pole position but only finished at third place. Unfortunately, LeClerc failed to earn any points at Monaco after a suspension problem forced him to retire from the race.

During the season, Charles LeClerc finished first in 2 sprint races and 5 featured races en route to claiming the FIA Formula 2 Championship, making him the youngest champion ever of the main support series for Formula 1 at the age of 19 years 356 days old.

In 2016, LeClerc joined the Ferrari Driver Academy with the role of development driver for Haas F1 Team and Scuderia Ferrari. As a part of his role, he participated in the practice session of the British and German Grand Prix for Haas.

Charles LeClerc then joined the Sauber F1 Team as a race driver for the 2018 Formula One World Championship. This is the first time a driver from Monaco make an appearance in Formula 1 since Olivier Berretta in 1994.

At the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, LeClerc finished in sixth place, making him the second Monégasque driver to score points in Formula 1 since Louis Chiron who finished third in the 1950 Monaco Grand Prix.

In his first home race, he was forced to retire after he suffered a brake failure in the closing laps that caused him to collide into the back of Brendon Hartley.

Charles LeClerc finished the season at the 13th spot in the championship with 39 points.

For the 2019 season, Scuderia Ferrari signed Charles LeClerc, replacing Kimi Raikkonen. His deal was initially for the 2019 season only, but it was soon announced that his contract was for four seasons, keeping him until at least 2022.

In his first Grand Prix for Ferrari, he started at the 5th position at the Australian Grand Prix. For the Bahrain Grand Prix, LeClerc did well in the practice and qualifying sessions which granted him pole position for the first time in his Formula 1 career — making him the youngest Ferrari pole-setter.

He then led for the majority of the race but was eventually surpassed by Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen after his engine dropped a cylinder due to a failed fuel injector. He settled for 3rd place, making it LeClerc’s first podium finish in his F1 career.

In the Belgian Grand Prix, Charles LeClerc picked up his first F1 win after fending off Lewis Hamilton, making him the youngest Ferrari champion ever. He picked up his second win at the Italian Grand Prix as he won the race from pole position.

LeClerc finished the 2019 season in fourth place with 264 points, 10 podium finishes, two wins, and seven pole positions. The following year, he dropped down to eighth place after scoring 98 points.

For the 2021 season, Charles LeClerc had a new Ferrari teammate in Carlos Sainz Jr. as he replaced Sebastian Vettel. The teammates were seen fighting on the track during the Brazilian Grand Prix, which was met positively by Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto.

Aside from his time on the track, Charles LeClerc is also active in charitable events. In 2018, he was named the ambassador for the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation wherein he promotes the benefits of learning how to swim.
