With a reported rift between the Minnesota Timberwolves and franchise piece Karl-Anthony Towns, teams have prepared to phone up and explore a potential trade to acquire the talented big man.

According to ESPN's Brian Windhorst, the L.A. Clippers called the Wolves when trying to move franchise star Blake Griffin before he was shipped to the Detroit Pistons before this year's trade deadline.

“I don’t think that the Wolves are looking to trade him, but teams are definitely sniffing around as if maybe there’s something here,” said Windhorst.

“They’ve already taken some calls on him. This is not new. Blake Griffin, the Clippers called and offered Blake Griffin for him. They’re going to, I believe, get more calls on this, especially the way there seems to be a disconnect between Karl and the franchise.”

The Clippers didn't stumble upon a trade for Griffin, but rather explored it heavily under wraps, finally deciding to acquire Tobias Harris, Avery Bradley, Boban Marjanovic, and a future first-round pick for Griffin, Willie Reed, and Brice Johnson.

Towns has had a difficult relationship with a strict mind like Tom Thibodeau after being under a more nurturing presence in the late Flip Saunders and Sam Mitchell.

Incorporating a veteran presence like Jimmy Butler has twisted what was a linear projection to grow through youth, which has changed the Wolves' playstyle dramatically, now with a player-coach on the court that reflects Thibodeau's same defensive ideals.
